Match Summary: Midwest Division II Finals - Cleveland Cricket Club - Warriors vs. UKCC Result: Cleveland Warriors won by 35 runs § After defeating Miamisburg CC in the Semi-Final on Saturday 9/17, Cleveland travels to Dayton on Sunday 9/18 to take on UKCC. § Both teams had similar records till the Finals and both teams had qualified for next year’s Division I after topping their respective groups. § Cleveland won the toss and elected to Bat. § A quick start was halted within the first few overs as Cleveland opener Davinder fell after edging to the keeper while trying to cut a ball. § Soon after, one down batsmen Mayank fell to a gem of a delivery while #4, Vignesh was given LBW after the umpires missed a slight inside edge. Cleveland at 40/3 in 12 overs. § Immediate trouble after the break as Sujay is run out while trying to steal a second run. Rahul joins opener Suhail who has resisted the UKCC bowling attack so far. § Spin is introduced and Rahul and Suhail dig in to establish a partnership. Excellent use of the feet to the spinners saw the scoreboard trickle along with good running and the occasional blow to a bad delivery. § Suhail falls after the second break unluckily as he tries to smash a short ball over mid-wicket, only to lose his balance and hit straight to the fielder. End of a solid innings that fetched him 51 runs. § Rahul and Sunny take on the spinners and take the power play in the 28th over. UKCC switches to medium pacers and in an effort to move along, both lose their wickets by over 31. § Shubhayu and Deepak hit a few blows and the inning comes to a close with Cleveland posting a challenging 170 in 35 overs. § UKCC go into the chase needing a solid start, Cleveland goes in knowing quick wickets and tight fielding is going to be the key. § UKCC gets a dream start as the Cleveland medium pacers fail to adjust to the upward slope of Stubbs park. A couple of mis-hits fall short and a sharp chance of Abhijit gets put down as UKCC motor along to 55/0 in 12. § Cleveland regroup after the break and start putting the pressure on UKCC via spin bowlers. Vinod is stumped brilliantly by Bala off Vignesh’s bowling to give Cleveland the breakthrough. § Prasanna does not trouble the scorers and hits straight to Rahul at long-on off Sujay and Abhijit follows soon after as they try to up the scoring against the spinners. § 3-down, Parasar and Pritesh dig in to counter Cleveland. A mix of Medium Pacers and Spin meant the batsmen could use the pace of the medium pacers to keep the scoreboard moving by hitting boundaries. § Cleveland bring in their third spinner and immediately reap rewards as Parasar tries to hit him over Long-off, only to find Davinder waiting for the catch. A similar attempt by Venky see’s Davinder taken another catch (albeit on the second attempt) and UKCC is down by 5 wickets and the teams go in for the second break. § Sensing a hole, Cleveland tightens up the run scoring with some good fielding. Eyeing Cleveland’s slowest fielder, Pritesh takes on Sunny for a quick double, only to get caught well short of his crease after a rocket throw from Sunny from short third man. § Six down, and spinners operating from both ends meant UKCC batsmen had to take aerial routes. Shubhayu takes a brilliant diving catch at point to get Suvid off Vignesh. § Seven down, needing a run a ball, Sujay tosses up a few up only for the batsmen to hit them straight to long off and long on fielders. Rahul at long on interrupts a ball sailing outside the boundary by taking a brilliant catch to dismiss Ramana – UKCC is 9 down. § Couple of balls later, Sujay fires in a full ball to take out Samir’s middle stump and complete a 35 run victory for Cleveland. § Cleveland takes the Div II crown in a well contested game where both sides saw up’s and down’s throughout the game. § Player of the Final – Sujay Ithychanda for a brilliant spell of 6.4-0-17-5
